The National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is currently being implemented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on a voluntary basis.  NAIS is intended to identify animals and poultry and record their movements over the course of their lifespan.  USDA’s ultimate goal is to create an effective, uniform national tracking system that will help maintain the health of U.S. herds and flocks.  When fully operational, it will allow animal tracing to be completed within 48 hours of a disease detection, ensuring rapid containment of the disease.

NMLB Executive Director Culbertson herding his cattle New Mexico Livestock Board has produced a video that explains the animal identification program and why volunteer, free premises registration is valuable to New Mexico ranchers and important to the communities they serve.  Click here to go to see the video.
